We have witnesses enormous changes in IT and privacy law during the past few years. Continued acts of terrorism throughout the world, war, spying on U.S. citizens, increasing incidents of data breaches and identity theft, cybercrime, legislative initiatives and technological advances affect all of us personally and professionally. Many now view privacy law and information policy differently – perhaps from a more global perspective. There is now great public awareness of the tension between national security and personal privacy. As a result, practicing, teaching and learning law in the areas of IT and privacy have changed dramatically.

My goals for this class are constantly evolving. Shortly after September 11, 2001, I made the decision to focus on reading assignments derived from the events of the day. This semester, we will continue to follow current events while exploring a wide range of issues affecting information law and policies. I hope you find the experience worthwhile. Know that right now, you are dealing with some of the biggest and most controversial legal issues of the day.

P.S. There’s a lot of reading for this class. The inclusion of many different types of material is intended to give you an overview of information theory, policy and law and a little background in a lot of areas. You are not required to brief cases or memorize statutes. Just familiarize yourself with the materials and be prepared to discuss the issues raised.
